SUMMARY:Barry Frank Memorial Lecture 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Physics is pleased to invite you to the Barry Frank Memorial Lecture\, to be delivered by Prof. N. Peter Armitage of Johns Hopkins University. \n\nLecture Title: On Ising’s Model of Ferromagnetism\nDate: Wednesday\, September 9\, 2026\, at 3:00 p.m.\nLocation: HB-130\, Loyola Campus\, Concordia University\, 7141 Sherbrooke Street West\, Montreal \nThe Ising model is one of the most influential models in modern physics\, shaping our understanding of thermodynamics\, magnetism\, critical phenomena\, quantum field theories\, and emergent behavior in many-body systems. In this lecture\, Prof. Armitage will explore both the scientific and historical significance of the Ising model\, highlighting recent experimental advances in the material CoNb₂O₆ and demonstrating how terahertz (THz) spectroscopy provides unique insight into its rich quantum behavior. \nProf. Armitage is a leading experimental physicist whose research focuses on quantum materials\, superconductivity\, and quantum magnetism. Since joining Johns Hopkins University in 2006\, he has received numerous distinctions\, including an NSF CAREER Award\, a Sloan Research Fellowship\, and the 2023 Brown Foundation Award. \nThe Barry Frank Memorial Lecture was established to honor the legacy of Barry Frank\, a distinguished physicist and educator who joined Sir George Williams University in 1965 and made lasting contributions to condensed matter physics and the teaching of physics.BarryFrankLecturePoster_4259 \nAll students\, researchers\, faculty members\, and members of the public are welcome to attend. We look forward to seeing you there.
